Using Discord via the web browser

Discord reported more than 140 million active monthly users at the end of 2021, making it one of the most popular communication platforms on the web. There are several versions of Discordincluding the Discord app and a version available through a web browser.

It only takes a few steps to access Discord through the web browser instead of through the Discord app. Discord works in the web browser on both Windows and Mac, but you need to download the app to use it on Android or through iOS.

Using Discord via the web browser

Discord works with almost all desktop web browsers, but many users report that Chrome is the best option as it offers a superior experience compared to Firefox or Opera. To access and use the web version of Discord, first go to Discord.com/login.

  1. Enter your email address or phone number and password in the appropriate fields.
  2. Select Login

After logging in, you will arrive at the friends tab of Discord. From this point on, you can navigate through Discord’s menus just like you would in the desktop app.

Discord Web Version vs Discord App

While navigating the Discord versions is similar, there are several notable differences between the two.

The browser version of Discord requires less system resources than the Discord application. It works easily in almost any browser, although many users have suggested using Google Chrome instead of other popular browsers like Firefox or Microsoft Edge.

The downside of being less resource intensive is that Discord web lacks some of the features gamers have come to appreciate about the desktop application.

The Discord application will show all your friends what game you are currently playing, but the browser version will not. In some cases this can be an advantage; if you want to chat with friends and play a game without anyone trying to join, use the web browser. On the other hand, if you want all your friends to see you grind away in Phantasy Star Online: New Genesisdo you want to start the desktop version.

Another important difference lies in voice chat. Many gamers today use mechanical keyboards for their increased responsiveness and better feel, but these keyboards are loud. To prevent your speech channel from being flooded with the sound of indiscriminate keys, Discord has a push-to-talk feature. This feature works on the web app, but only if it’s the active window.

If you want to use push to talk while playing a game you have to use the desktop version of Discord. You can switch between these options in the User Settings menu.

  1. Open disagreement
  2. Select User Settings in the lower left corner of the screen next to your name.
  1. Select Speech & video.
  1. Select Push to talk† When you open Discord through the web browser, the word Limited appears next to the option in parentheses.

If you select: Push to talk while in the web browser, a warning will say that push-to-talk is only active when the window is in focus. The browser version is set to: speech activity.

These are both important factors to consider when deciding which version of Discord to use. The Discord app can also be set to launch on startup. If you only use your PC for gaming, the ability to jump straight to Discord as soon as you boot your PC can save you time. It can also use your PC’s system notifications to send Discord notifications.

While versions of Discord are available on mobile devices such as iPhone and Android, they are more limited in function than both desktop versions. So as long as you have access Discord Nitro through almost any version of Discord, this is best experienced through the desktop app.

Gamers have been asking for console-based versions of Discord for some time now, hoping Xbox will adopt Discord. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, there’s no word on whether Discord will make its way to Xbox, although PlayStation has said they hope to bring Discord to Sony consoles within a year.
